Once You Choose Hope Anything is Possible

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Looking at the statistics above, it seems likely that we all know someone (if not yourself) that has been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Myself, I can testify to the difficult year I fought breast cancer. The endless tests, surgeries, and depleted energy were all a part of my journey of restoration. Today I can declare I am a survivor!

Here are some attributes that you will want to hold close to your heart while you are going through your healing.

Love – Choose love over fear.  Love never fails. 1 John 4:16; We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

Faith – Let your faith be bigger than your circumstances. Have faith in the goodness of God to provide hope for the future. Hebrews 12:2; Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author, and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Strength – While you are healing from the physical scars or the emotional scars that breast cancer brings, meditate on His promises. He is faithful. Isaiah 40:29;  “He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength”

Hope – Hope looks forward. You will be able to break free from any fear and despair and receive healing and restoration. Psalm 39:7; “But now Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.”

Pink Hope

Hold On Pain Ends – Whatever you are struggling with today, I encourage you to open your heart to the one who is our hope. The Lord is with you  –  be dependent on Him today. Rest in Him and His promise of eternal life. Nothing can separate you from His love for you. Once You Choose Hope Anything is Possible!

Cultivate Compassion – God has great compassion towards you. Now put your compassion into action. There are many practical ways to help a woman that is suffering. You can lighten her load by preparing a meal, helping with the kids, running errands, and completing household chores. Your encouraging words and prayers will bring hope to the hurting.

Pray-ButtonThank you, Lord, for your love and compassion towards me. Show me those who need my help and compassion.

Are You Willing to Give the Lord the Key to Your Heart?

key to my heartHave you spent too much time in the valleys of life? Wouldn’t you like to walk in the freedom of Christ? Jesus’ shed blood on the cross paid the price to set us free.

Scripture tells us in Psalm 44:21b, For He knows the secrets of the heart.” God wants you to surrender control of your heart. I know this to be true because Jesus waited patiently for me, drawing me close to Him, at times lovingly chastising me along the path to discovering true freedom.

There was a time my heart had become hardened from pain and brokenness. My heart was locked inside walls of sorrow. I kept it protected from future pain, and I vowed never to let anyone or anything hurt me again. But, the Lord required me to hand over the key to my heart. He wanted access to all the locked doors.

Healing is a process. At times, I felt shackled to the weight of my sin. Guilt, shame and condemnation separated me from God’s healing. A hardened heart cannot yield to God’s plan of redemption. Jeremiah 29:11 states, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Your hope is secure in the Lord’s hands.

God knows the secrets of the heart Slowly, God’s light came into the wounded places bringing with it hope and healing. At times the healing was painful, but I was never alone. Jesus was with me and bringing me out of captivity one step at a time.

Firsthand, I experienced the Lord’s steadfast love and His compassionate heart. He healed my broken heart, one shattered piece at a time. All that was required of me was to trust Him with the key to my heart.

Pray-ButtonThank you Lord for your compassionate heart to bring healing and freedom into my life.

Has your heart become hardened as a result of life’s trials? What areas do you need to surrender to the Lord?

Glimpses of God’s Heart

Guard heart - Prov 4-23

Your heart is at the core of your identity. The NKJV Bible refers to the heart in 926 verses. God’s Word sets a top priority on keeping our hearts pure. The more we walk in righteousness, the closer we are to God’s heart. Proverbs 4:23

Often, our emphasis is on the outward appearance rather than the inner condition of the heart. It is easy to judge and condemn others when all we see is their outward actions or behavior.  For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

We may not understand our own hearts, but God does. God is willing and able to forgive us because He knows our heart and understands the cause of our sin. For He knows the secrets of the heart. Psalm 44:21

Create in me a clean heart

So how then should we live? Love unconditionally and freely forgive others. Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

Let God love you. Give Him your love in return, and share His love with others. There are many waiting for you to show His heart to be steadfast and true.

ThankPray-Button you Lord for knowing my heart and loving me unconditionally in spite of my sin.

Kindness Matters

“The fruit of the Spirit is …
love, joy, peace,Kindess

patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control.”             (Galatians 5:22-23)

What does kindness look like to you? An encouraging note, an unexpected gift, a homemade treat, a friend calling to pray with you, or a gentle touch towards someone who is feeling fragile. Whatever comes to mind, it probably brings a big smile to your face and a sense of loving care.

My mother-in-law would often say, “Kindness is love in its work clothes”. It is a call to action. Kindness is humbly giving of ourselves in love and mercy to others who may not be able to give anything back, who may not deserve it, and who may not thank us for it.

Simply put, kindness is a way of thinking that leads to doing thoughtful deeds for others. “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)

A Kind GestureGod wants us to demonstrate kindness because we are to extend His love and mercy to the world. Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the difference. When we consistently show tender mercies to others, little by little, it will add up to a changed heart – one formed by kindness.

Last week with my hubby, Tom, in the hospital having his hip replaced, we were on the receiving end of many acts of kindness. We are so grateful to the kind nurses and therapists, but also to the friends who came to visit and offer their help.

Pray-ButtonThank you Lord for your loving kindness towards your children. Guide us to those who need a touch of compassion from you.

Breast Cancer Butterfly

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I love this butterfly – with one glance  you know breast cancer is not for wimps. You will need all four traits in your survival kit.

Love – Choose love over fear. 1 John 4:16; We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

Faith – Let your faith be bigger than your fear. Hebrews 12:2; Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hope – Hope looks forward. You will be able to break free from any fear and despair and receive healing and restoration. Psalm 39:7; “But now Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.”

Pink Hope

A Quiet Refuge of Compassion

Be kind and compassionateA kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal – Steve Maraboli

“Alone in a hospital bed in Baton Rouge, I lay in a cocoon of plaster, restraining my body in the hope of repairing my shattered bones. My hospital room was a quiet refuge from the physical and emotional trauma I had suffered at the hands of a rival biker m16gang. I was a victim in a violent gang war, enduring intense pain after being shot in my left arm and right leg with M-16 rifles.”

cover_art_Chicken Soup*Except from Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for Nurses

A Quiet Refuge is my story of the life-giving support that I experienced from the comforting hands and benevolent heart of an incredible nurse named Reni. Thirty-eight years later and thousands of miles apart, I am still so grateful for her many acts of kindness. She taught me that compassion towards others can restore hope and give strength to the weak. We only spent a couple of months together, yet we formed a bond of friendship that continues to this day.

During the time of my suffering in the hospital, consumed with shame and condemnation, I felt abandoned and unloved. Reni’s compassionate acts proved to be a reminder of God’s love for me. Her selfless actions demonstrated her strong desire to alleviate my suffering. And isn’t that at the heart of compassion…the essence of feeling another’s pain, while easing their hurt.

The Lord calls us to compassion – Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous. 1 Peter 3:8 (NJKV)

Pray-ButtonThank you Lord for your heart of compassion. May we be sensitive to share the hope and encouragement that your love brings to others in need.

Are You Too Broken?

broken tattooI remember the time my doctor informed me that my arm was too shattered to ever function again.

My psychologist told me I would never be able to love anyone again.

My friends concluded I would always live with the shame and condemnation of my past.

The world reported to me that a broken heart never really heals. So… I masked mine in a protective shell to shelter me from any more hurt and pain. I told myself it was the end of ever finding joy, hope and purpose in my life.

The significance of being broken can take on many meanings. Here’s a few: damaged, crushed, shattered, destroyed, defective, not functioning properly.

Have you ever felt such brokenness, hopelessness, emptiness and sorrow? I know I have been broken – physically, mentally and spiritually. I was devastated by the trauma of it all until I discovered that the truth of God’s love, compassion and grace overwhelmed my brokenness.

broken - grace

The New King James Bible reveals 165 results for broken. The Scriptures have a lot to declare about brokenness. For a list of Healing Scriptures, check on my website.

He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.          Psalm 147:3

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. Psalm 34:18

broken heart - Ps 34-18

Dear Friend, I want you to know that the Lord can restore what is broken and change you into a person of hope, joy, and purpose by His transforming love. You are not too broken; your past does not define you; you can be whole again!

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

Today…I can move my arm in spite of what the doctor predicted. I have been married to a wonderful man for 32 years. I do not live with shame and condemnation from my past. Jesus uses my brokenness to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel to those who are lost and hurting. I do live with some physical disabilities, but I have found joy and hope in God’s plan and purpose for my life (Jeremiah 29:11). For more: click to read my testimony.

Pray-ButtonThank you Lord for your transforming love to heal our brokenness and restore us with love, hope and joy in your salvation.

Our Tears are Important to God

God expresses His love for us in so many amazing ways. In his unending compassion, He stores our tears in a bottle and keeps them in His book. Why would He do this? Scripture simply declares to us, our tears are important to God!                             Tears in a bottle

You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle;
Are they not in Your book?  Psalm 56:8 (NJKV)

We never cry alone. God cares about each tear and the reasons we cry them. Tears of sorrow, tears of frustration, tears of hurt and anger, tears of despair and tears of joy – they are all a gift from God. We never have to explain the reason for our tears; God understands.

The Lord is not immune to tears. Jesus wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41). Jesus wept over the death of Lazarus (John 11:35).

sow in tears - reap in joyTears are comfort for the hurting heart. They release our emotions and help to express the feelings that cannot be put into words. God uses our tears to point us to Him.

Those who sow in tears, Shall reap in joy. Psalm 126:5 (NKJV)

Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning.          Psalm 30:5a (NKJV)

beauty girl cry

You can find comfort in knowing that whatever you are going through, God has great compassion towards you. Your tears are so precious to Him that He collects them in a bottle & records them in His book.

You need not be  embarrassed about your tears, even when you try to hold them back. He is present with every tear shed; you can have utmost confidence God cares for you.

Pray-Button

Lord, I am so grateful for the love and compassion you have towards me. My heart is comforted in knowing that you are with me for every tear I shed.

The Power of Hope

hope anchors soulWe live in a fallen world. There is brokenness all around us. Yet, the Lord calls us to live joyfully in the midst of our struggles. Is this possible? Yes, by the power of the Holy Spirit living in us!

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Romans 15:13 (NKJV)

The seasons of our lives are not predictable. There will be times of grief and sorrow, times of adversity and trouble, but we can move forward with hope and comfort by trusting in the Lord’s love and compassion for us.

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”  Lamentations 3:22-24 (NKJV)

Be kind and compassionate

Cultivate Compassion – There are times when our words and actions can bring hope to the hurting. We can put our compassion into action by using our time, money and energy to help someone in need.  Prayer – Whether you pray with someone or speak to the Lord on their behalf, prayer brings hope and comfort.

Pray – Lord, show me what I can do for those who are in need. Reveal areas in my life that need to receive your hope and healing. Thank you for your love and compassion.
